Active Acne
Acne forms when a skin pore becomes clogged causing skin oil that normally drains to the surface to get trapped inside. Living inside this skin oil is acne bacteria, called Cutibacterium acnes (C. acnes). When skin oil gets trapped, C. acnes multiplies.
However, acne is not a bacterial disease. Acne is an inflammatory disease, and C. acnes is simply just one component of the disease. Fortunately, as research advances and new technology becomes available, there is hope of ridding yourself of this confidence barrier.
Lasers can Help!
A laser target is a chromophore. Bacteria is a chromophore. By targeting the bacteria with a laser beam, the bacteria heats up enough to kill it. Laser is the best treatment to get to this bacteria to kill it, as topical creams and ointments have a hard time reaching it under the surface. Antibiotics have also been used in the past, but the long-term use of them can lead to serious complications.
Acne Scars
Acne scars are areas of permanent skin damage that occur when severe acne (like cysts or nodules) disrupts the skin’s healing process. When acne lesions heal, the body sometimes produces too little or too much collagen, leading to scars.
Lasers can Help!
Laser treatments are a popular and effective option for improving the appearance of acne scars. They work by stimulating the skin's natural healing process, remodeling collagen, and smoothing the skin's surface.

Treating Active Acne
Using a laser to treat acne works by using high-intensity light beams to target the bacteria, heating them up, and killing them.
Here's how it works step-by-step:

Laser Selection-
Our Technician choses the correct laser wavelength to target C.acne bacteria.

The Laser Kills-
The laser is pointed at the area affected by acne. It's energy is absorbed by the bacteria, heating it up and killing it.

Skin Clears-
Redness and swelling from active acne lesions typically decrease soon after treatment.
Noteworthy Points
Treatment Protocol: The treatment protocol will depend on the severity of the patient's acne condition. The typical skin treatment course should be about 4-6 sessions a few weeks apart.
Treating Acne is a Commitment: Remember to use clean brushes for makeup, keep your phone clean, and considering changing pillowcases every couple days, as the C. acnes bacteria is found everywhere.
Treating Acne Scars
Laser treatments stimulate collagen production in addition to killing bacteria. This helps repair damaged skin, improving the appearance of acne scars over time.
Here's how it works step-by-step:

Laser Selection-
The same laser wavelength and settings can be used for active acne and skin rejuvenation. However, if the focus is on rebuilding scars only, a more specific wavelength can be chosen.

Micro holes-
The lasers heat creates micro holes in the dermis, creating *collagen growth.

Smooth Skin-
As the *collagen begins to rebuild the dermis, the skin raises up to it's original shape in due time.

* Collagen is a protein that gives structure, strength, and flexibility to your skin, bones, muscles, and connective tissues. It's like the glue that holds your body together and keeps your skin firm and smooth.
Noteworthy Points
How many sessions should you expect? How far apart?
Typically 3-5 sessions spaced 1-4 weeks apart are needed to start. It depends on the severity of the acne. Acne is not curable, but laser can help minimize breakouts significantly. Keeping up a good skin care regimen in the meantime is essential. Maintenance sessions are done after the initial series on an as-needed basis.
Treating Acne is a Commitment
The fact that C. acnes lives on normal skin and yet not all people develop acne indicates that its mere presence does not necessarily mean it causes acne. HOWEVER, it definitely contributes to acne. So as a proactive measure, be sure to wash your hands frequently before touching your face, keep makeup brushes clean, keep your phone clean, and consider changing out your pillowcases and possibly the full sheet set every couple days.
Is the procedure painful?
Treating active acne is not painful but it can be a bit uncomfortable due to the heating up process. Treating acne scarring can be uncomfortable. It is often described as feeling a rubber band snap. A sunburned sensation is common for a few hours post-procedure, sometimes lasting overnight. Numbing cream is available for the procedure. Please talk to the technician prior to your appointment if you are interested in trying numbing cream. Pinpoint bleeding is also common. Pinpoint bleeding is very light bleeding coming from what appears to be pinpricks.

Pre-care and Post-care for Active Acne and Acne Scarring Treatment:
-
Hair Cycles and Dormant FolliclesAs discussed, hair grows in cycles (anagen, catagen, telogen), and laser hair removal is most effective when the hair is in the anagen (growth) phase. Not all hair is in this phase at the same time, so multiple treatments are required to target hairs in different stages of growth. Dormant hair follicles (those in the catagen or telogen phase) may not be targeted during initial treatments. Over time, some dormant follicles may become active again, leading to new hair growth. Maintenance treatments can address these newly active follicles.
-
HormonesHormones play a significant role in hair growth. Hormonal fluctuations, such as those experienced during pregnancy, menopause, or certain medical conditions like polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), can stimulate the growth of new hair or cause previously treated follicles to become active again.
-
Individuals Can Respond Differently to TreatmentNot everyone responds the same way to laser hair removal. Some people may have more resilient hair follicles that don’t respond as strongly to the laser, leading to some regrowth. Additionally, people with lighter hair or darker skin may need more frequent maintenance treatments, as these factors can affect the laser's ability to effectively target and disable hair follicles.
-
Age and GeneticsAs people age, the body's hair growth patterns can change, and new hair growth can sometimes appear in areas previously treated. Genetic factors can also affect how well hair follicles respond to laser treatments.
-
Environmental and Lifestyle FactorsIn some cases, environmental factors or lifestyle habits may trigger new hair growth. Stress, diet, or even changes in medication can influence hair growth patterns.
