What is melasma and what does it look like?
Melasma is a common skin disorder. It looks like brown, dark brown and/or blue-gray patches on the skin. Common affected areas include cheeks, upper lip and forehead, but other parts of the body can be affected.
Melasma is sometimes called the "mask of pregnancy" because it frequently affects pregnant women. Melasma typically darkens and lightens over time, often getting worse in the summer with the sun and heat, but better in the winter when we are indoors more.
Many things can trigger melasma, most of all heat, sun, and hormones, but also genetics, skin care products, and hypothyroidism.
The bad news...
The bad news is melasma is not curable.
The good news...
It can be kept at bay by taking time out of the sun and staying away from heat sources, taking caution with certain medications and skin care products, and being on a hormone balancing regimen.
Another option is to use a pigment reduction medication, commonly called skin bleach. Unfortunately, extended use of such products can end up causing unwanted side effects after prolonged use.
